Planning a move

Moving can be a stressful and confusing endeavor. There are so many little details to take care of, and if you miss one it could be a big deal. Check out this handy check list and time frame to plan a successful and stress-free move.

Get Ready!

8-6 weeks before move:

  • Create a digital or paper ‘moving file’ to keep track of all of the quotes, receipts and records. Remembering all of this is impossible, and you want it all in one easy to access place.

  • Schedule appointments for estimates with a moving company. Try to get at least 3 estimates for comparisons. Make sure you read over all contracts and documents from moving companies before you sign to avoid any unpleasant surprises. And ALWAYS confirm the moving company’s license with the Department Of Transportation (DOT).

  • Create a budget, even if you aren’t using a moving company. You need to plan what you are spending on packing supplies and moving vehicle rentals.

  • Make a plan to move any large or unusual items like pianos, guns, pool tables or safes.

  • Check in with local schools for kids so you are registered and can get any transcripts from old schools if needed.

  • Request time off work for your move!

6-4 weeks before move:

  • Start collecting supplies; boxes from restaurants/appliance stores or purchase boxes. Don’t forget tape and newspaper.

  • If you’re moving into an apartment or condo, see if there are any moving day requirements

  • If you’re moving cross country have your vehicle serviced, and if shipping a vehicle don’t leave any valuables inside.

  • Purchase insurance for any items shipped.

4-2 weeks before move:

  • Start packing a little every day, and organize your labels! Take photos of electronic plug ins, put disassembled furniture hardware into labeled bags, label fragile items clearly.

  • Confirm parking situation for any moving vehicles.

  • Arrange for insurance on your new home to start at time of possession! Not the day after, but the exact time, because you never know.

  • Schedule your change of address at the USPS.

  • Update your voter registration!

  • Get rid of all the things you don’t want to take with you, like things buried in the freezer and ancient pantry items. Hold a yard sale or donating old clothing or furniture.

  • Make sure to update any pet collars and id chips (your vet can do this) and research for a new vet if you’re moving out of the area.

  • Gather all of the vital documents like birth certificates and passports for everyone in the household together into one place so they don’t get lost in the shuffle.

2-1 weeks before move:

  • Back up your computer!

  • moving out of the area? for a far move don’t forget to clean out gym lockers, safe deposit boxes or storage spaces.

  • Far movers should also cancel memberships to gyms, yoga studios, etc.

  • Have a list of vendors for home repairs, no one wants to be googling plumbers as the house fills with water, or worse. A real estate expert (ahem, me) can also be a fantastic source for well-vetted plumbers, electricians, roofers, and tradespeople of all kinds.

  • Send change of address forms to banks, credit card companies, payroll department at work, loan providers and don’t for get to order new checks!

  • Change your address for your auto insurance and DMV registration.

  • Make sure all utilities at your new address, including water, sewer, electrical and trash are transferred to your name, and cancelled at your old address. Make sure you schedule this for your first full day of possession!

The week you move:

  • Reschedule any deliveries (order a pair of shoes last week?, standing order with grocery store?).

  • Clean your currant home for the next resident.

  • Empty oil and gas from lawnmowers, gas grills, heaters.

  • Pack an essentials box with everything you’ll need for your first 24 hours in your new home.

  • Check the weather to prepare if there is rain/snow/extreme heat.

  • Have cash ready to tip your movers.

  • Make a plan if your movers are late.

  • Clean your new place before moving in (if possible).

Moving Day!

  • Protect floors and carpets during move.

  • As soon as movers leave and everything is in the house, unpack sheets and towels and shower curtains. Makes a quick shower and nap easier!

  • If curtains or shades haven’t arrived, put up sheets to block windows, you’ll sleep easier.

  • Make a quick grocery store/take out run for dinner.

Enjoy your new home.
